Indiana Derby

Irap crushed this field as expected as the top Super Screener win pick, though he didn’t beat much here so kudos to Doug O’Neill and company for putting him in these second tier stakes races for 3 year olds where he can win.

What we were particularly excited about was our top value pick, Colonelsdarktemper, finishing a clear second at generous odds of 11-1.  The post draw really compromised his chances and while he certainly wasn’t going to win this race, this was a strong effort and he deserves a shot to take on better.

“#10 Colonelsdarktemper (Top Value Play) would be rated higher had it not been for the very poor post draw given the very short run to the first turn.  He’ll be rushed early and stranded outside for awhile while trying to secure good early position and after that his jock will need to work out a trip from there.  He possesses the best form cycle progression of the bunch and if the lousy post draw doesn’t take too much out of him, he’ll be right there.”

Mari Hulman Stakes

Jockey Florent Geroux chose his mount wisely, jumping off Big World to lead the Super Screener Top Value/Top Board Hitter play, Tiger Moth, to victory at odds of 7-1 as the predicted pace pressure materialized and she took full advantage of it with a dominating stretch run.  Here’s what the Super Screener had to say about Tiger Moth:

“Speaking of #6 Tiger Moth, this deep closer will find both the pace set up and this particular racing surface (which isn’t always kind to pace types) to her liking.  This one will offer good value if odds are anywhere close to 10-1.  Look for her to take up a spot at the back of the field and then start winding up as they head into the far turn picking off horses one by one as she proceeds through the stretch.  Faces a ton easier here so Screener is anticipating something close to a lifetime top performance today.”

Mo d’ Amour was the Super Screener top long shot pick but she ended up going off at 7-1 so smart money was definitely in play.  She was a strong Screener recommendation to use in your Exotics wagers.

“#3 Mo d’ Amour will definitely get overlooked some here as the abandonment by Todd Pletcher will scare some off.  If this were a Graded Stakes affair the Screener would probably avoid this one but this is a much easier field she is facing today…nowhere near the quality she was up against last year.  This is only her 2nd start since Nov. and work pattern is very encouraging.  In her last race in April she had no shot after getting clobbered by a rival mid stretch. Screener is recommending this one to be used in your Exotics wagers especially at 12-1 or higher. Sneaky.”

Hockessin Stakes

Three horses were scratched reducing the field from 8 to 5 contestants.  A critical one took place after we published our Saturday afternoon final of the Super Screener…Chief Lion, the projected pace leader, which certainly changed the complexion of the race, was a late scratch.  However, our top 3 picks post the scratches comprised the top three finishers in the race and suggested wagers hit the Exacta for $90 which isn’t bad considering it was a 5 horse field.

Forbidden Apple

Through scratches, this field was reduced from 11 starters to just 7.  Disco Partner, for the Clement Christophe barn proved he can handle the mile distance just fine and he will continue on the mile route turf regimen while his esteemed stablemate, Pure Sensation, will stick with what he does best…turf sprinting.  Barn is well positioned with that pair to do some damage this Summer as well as in Breeders’ Cup races this Fall at Del Mar.

Besides Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup week, there is no week on the racing calendar anticipated more by horse players than this coming week when Del Mar and Saratoga return to racing action.  That means we’ll have 9 weeks of glorious, Graded Stakes-loaded weekends to look forward to with plenty of full fields to boot. We’ll be covering it all here with the Super Screener and we look forward to exciting stakes action all summer long.

Until next weekend…Go fast and win!

Mike
