2015 Met Mile (G1) post race recap
Before the race, we knew the Met Mile was going to be in the running for race of the year with the field assembled. The Metropolitan’s prestige and one mile distance attracted a fabulous cross section of the best older horses in the country. Classic distance stars Bayern, Tonalist, and Wicked Strong faced off against sprinting and middle distance stars Private Zone, Honor Code and Tamarkuz.
The race itself lived up to the hype as Private Zone and Bayern blazed early fractions of 22.42, 44.92 and 1:08.74, setting up the late runs of Tonalist and Honor Code. Like he’s done before when things don’t go right, Bayern wilted and faded to last while Private Zone dug in gamely and looked poised for the victory until a blur in green called Honor Code rushed by and won with a final time of 1:33.18. Tonalist made his strongest running in the final 1/16th to secure a clear 2nd while Private Zone demonstrated his grit by fighting off Tamarkuz and hung on for 3rd.
It was an easy choice to make this one of our performances of the year.
WINNER: Honor Code
TRACK BIAS: none
TOUGH TRIP: Private Zone set a wicked pace and managed to hit the board, Bay of Plenty checked badly at the start but was unlikely to affect the outcome anyway
IMPRESSIVE EFFORT: Honor Code got a perfect setup but dispatched a world class field with ease, Tonalist ran a wining race but just hooked a monster and Private Zone continues to show off his blazing speed and huge heart
