Great Screener Weekend at Saratoga & Del Mar!

With Saratoga kicking off its 2016 season, we were excited to get into the deep fields and juicy pari-mutuel pools at the spa! Our analysis paid off – here’s a look at the results!

Diana Handicap G1 – Saratoga

The Super Screener kicked off Saturday with a great outcome in the G1 Diana. From our top 5 ranked horses, 4 of those fillies and mares made up the Superfecta including our top long shot bomber pick, #9 Rainha Da Bateria who nearly took it all down at 28-1! For those that know me, I am not one for swearing but when stewards decided not to take down #7 Recepta and move #9 Rainha Da Bateria up to second, I let out a “rhymes with Hit” loud enough to be heard 3 miles from where I was standing. Oh my, what could have been with a second place finish by that game filly! Here’s what we said about #9 Rainha Da Bateria in the Super Screener analysis:

#6 Dacita won the race coming from last to first in a brilliant ride navigated deftly by Irad Ortiz Jr. This was a key horse in our win trio…

#2 Miss Temple City lost all chance getting bottled up behind and around tiring speed horses from the top of the stretch into mid stretch. Once she found room she was game through the wire but got out sprinted by the top three finishers whose stretch run was uninterrupted. One to definitely tab as a “trouble” horse next time out. Here’s the replay:

The highly regarded #4 Wekeela lost all chance breaking slowest of all at the gate and the jockey did not abuse her. One to tab for her next run.

We did hit the Trifecta for over $600 and if the stewards had moved #9 Rainha Da Bateria up to second, you are looking at a $.50 Superfecta pay off of over $3,000!… hence the expletive heard ‘round the world! Hopefully, some of you boxed our top five picks and hit the big Superfecta pay off.

San Clemente G2 – Del Mar

Another nice outcome here for the Super Screener with the winning Trifecta coming from our top four selections. #9 Mokat was our top value play in the race and our “co-A” horse… a must-use key horse in your horizontal wagers. The swift and pressured pace we projected materialized and worked to the winner’s advantage. We anticipated that the crowd would let this one go at a decent price after that poor finish in the Kentucky Oaks in which she was clearly overmatched.

Our top choice, #3 Be Mine hit the Superfecta but disappointed some running too close to the swift pace and then coming up flat in the stretch while #2 Lady Valeur probably ran the best race of this bunch sitting close to the early fire and then hanging on gamely for second. Probably regresses next time out as she gave her all in this one so keep that in mind. With our value play finishing on top, we did click on a $1 Trifecta for a $413 payoff capping of a total wager pay off for the day of over $1,000.

San Diego Handicap G2 – Del Mar

With the defections from this field we were left with 5 horses and it set up, as expected, to be a match race between #6 California Chrome and #2 Dortmund…and what a race it was…a dog fight between these two throughout with both putting on one heck of a display of determination but #6 California Chrome prevailed in the end. However, #2 Dortmund was no slouch in defeat as he actually ran by #6 California Chrome shortly past the wire. Look for this 4 year-old to make an impact in stakes races to come on the way to the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile or even the Classic. This wasn’t a betting race in the end but one to savor for the true racing fan.
