G2 Rebel Stakes

Bob Baffert-trained American Anthem never looked comfortable throughout the 1 1/16 mile Rebel stakes, flinging wide into the first turn while pulling Mike Smith with a burst on the back stretch, still trying to get out, going from 8th to 5th, but then tossed the bit and had nothing left turning for home.  Todd Pletcher’s Malagacy, however, answered the question regarding his ability to carry that front-loaded sprint speed with effectiveness routing.  He did just that and will now be tested at 1 1/8 miles as he moves on to the Arkansas Derby in four weeks.

(Malagacy) Pletcher’s precocious colt adds to the hot and pressured pace stretching out to the route distance for the first time.  Energy distribution is forwardly placed.  Castellano sticks and is in for this race.  Quality colt that will be bet hard.”

The BRIS numbers for this race are coming back pretty soft, however, for both the pace and speed ratings, so the Super Screener will be discounting the efforts of all players in this race as they advance into their final round of preps.

Given the softer pace outcome, the Super Screener was even more impressed with Sonneteer, our top long shot bomber pick, as he got no pace help, but this giant colt did all that closing on his own to narrowly secure second place at the unbelievable odds of 112-1!  It sounds like connections are considering just training him up to the Kentucky Derby, which we hope is the case as he will become a forgotten horse by then. This would set him up as a possible dangerous long shot bomber pick come the first Saturday in May.  This is a true 1 ¼ distance horse among a Derby crop that is suspect on that ability.  Here’s why the Super Screener selected Sonneteer as the top long shot pick in the race:

“#3 Sonneteer, still a maiden after 8 starts, ships in from CA for the always dangerous, Keith Desormeaux barn.  Like #11 Lookin At Lee, who does all his running late, look for this one to be running fastest of all down the lane passing half the field and looking for a spot on the bottom of the Trifecta or the Superfecta at a huge price.”

For this efforts, Sonneteer’s explosive 2nd place finish keyed a suggested Screener Trifecta juicy payoff of $3,772!

G2 Azeri Stakes

The bridge jumper that loaded that mammoth show wager on the odds-on favorite, Terra Promessa, had to watch in horror as one unfortunate event lead to another and another resulting in an off-the-board finish – exploding the show pool payoffs.  Our top value play and 2nd ranked horse, Streamline, took advantage of the series of unfortunate events and pressed and prevailed for the win at generous odds of 12-1.  Here’s what the Super Screener anticipated about this top value play:

“#7 Streamline is an interesting value play.  Yes, she was soundly defeated by #2 Terra Promessa in her last two races but her form last Spring had shown that she moved up big in this same race finishing a game 3rd only 3/4 of a length off the win at odds of 9-1.  She hasn’t missed the Superfecta in 16 lifetime starts and she’ll be the big surprise shot here so play, accordingly.” TOP VALUE PLAY Talk about consistent.  Has never missed the Trifecta in 6 starts on this track.  Has finished a distant 3rd to #2 Terra Promessa in her last two but closes the gap here third off the layoff.  Past patterns indicates this mare is sitting on a big race.

The Super Screener top longshot bomber pick, Tiger Moth, absolutely exploded down the stretch to get up at the wire for 3rd at odds of nearly 30-1.  That 3rd place finish was the key to a $12 Screener suggested tight Trifecta wager in which Tiger Moth was singled in 3rd with Streamline and Terra Promessa the lone win plays.  That combination returned a gratifying $5,707 for the $72 wager.  Here’s the scoop on Tiger Moth:

“#3 Tiger Moth is a very nice price shot here and deserves some consideration to use “under” in your exotics.  Trainer, Brad Cox only runs them if they have a shot.  Has only 2 races since March 2016 but the last effort was a good win against lesser. Moves forward off the solid works and look for a big surprise finish at a price.”

G1 Santa Margarita

The Super Screener was spot on tabbing Vale Dori as the horse “holding all the cards” and she dominated once again.  The Super Screener was dead wrong about the stretch out sprinter Finest City, as she was anything other than vulnerable chasing Vale Dori throughout before finally tiring late, but still clearing the rest of the field by over 9 lengths.  Wild at Heart and Show Stealer finished in the back with no apparent excuses.

Irish O’Brien Stakes

The Super Screener was in search of a stakes race that could offer value and thought we had one with the Irish O’ Brien Stakes but three scratches destroyed that opportunity resulting in removing 2 significant pace players, allowing the odds-on favorite, Enola Gray, the easiest of trips.

(Enola Gray) Never out of the Trifecta in 8 lifetime starts and is 7 for 8 in the Exacta. Also dueled last out and then drew away.  More company up front today but does not need a lone lead to win.  Deserved favorite and the one to beat.”

The Kentucky Derby prep action continues next week with 3, count ‘em 3 preps, that include the G3 Spiral Stakes, the G3 Sunland Derby and from Dubai, the G2 UAE Derby.  And, of course, we’ll be watching the Dubai World Cup to see if Arrogate can complete the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Pegasus, World Cup triple.  Doesn’t get more exciting than that.

Until then…Go fast and win!
